GARYEOW GARYLEI ARCHITECTURE
x
Project 1 deals with user experience that requires students to design a personal space which is intended for a specific user based on an in-depth study of the user's need. It is to develop awareness of environmental sustainability in a design and student's abiltity to meet the imperative and inter-related social needs. In addition, the project will prepare students to programmatic requirements of specific group of users for Project 2.
First of all, we visited Little Sister of the Poor, elderly home at Cheras, and carried out an interview with an elderly. There comes a cheerful lady, face with no trace of despair or sadness as other elderlies do, travelling down the corridor next to the handicraft-making room with her tiny trolley (carries those clothes for blanket making). She is Agnes, client that we aim to propose a personal space for her. Her life was interesting...from cooker to floral festival decoration in charge, but now, she is like a "clown" who tries to bring laughter to the elderly home residents and a "part time cat caretaker". Her cat, was being selective, that only Agnes can hug or pat it, as if her soulmate that accompanies her all the time. Surprisingly, she is smoker, that we know it is prohibited in elderly home. Well, perhaps she just wanted to have a quick smoke and relax under the shady tree, thinking about those moments that she tries to remember?
So we came out with a design concept about seen and unseen, about appearance and deep-inside thoughts that Agnes actually enjoy to do. 3 main programmes are created in the space are secret smoking area (we think it is a need, or else Agnes don't have a proper spot to relax), pet area (mainly for her loving cat) and small dry pantry to serve visitor during special event (she can't get near to the fire, but sandwiches or light snack will be prepared to allow her to serve her "customer" again!). Beauty lies on its form, that open to the surrounding, welcomes elderlies to her little stall, where behind the stall is the private space for smoking-pleasure and cat-interactive spot.
PROJECT 1
This modules teach me a lot from practicality and idealogy to accomplish the task prepared. Both projects' clients are mainly elderlies, so we have to think carefully and make a precise decision in choosing design forms, materials and etc. Tutors are incrediblely great in guiding me to enhancing and improving my design, while advising me in practical aspects such as construction details and choice of materials and colors. Meanwhile, I am grateful that i learnt a lot from the mistakes that i did, which allow me to rethink and revise to generate better ideas. This subject definitely a good learning platform and opportunity for us to be more mature-thinking without compromising the creativity and innovation.
Presentation board and model:
The project calls for a design of elderly center for the Elderly in a suburban areaa with some compexity that includes the complexity of site topography and vegetation and socio-cultural events. Students are required to provide full design proposal incorporating precendents study and site analysis at appropriate level of presentation. It explores design solution that harness environmental qualities and conditions for human and environment sustainability. Students explore design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilizing clustered spatial typology and passive energy. The design should be contribute to and merge harmoniously with nature and the site, and provide the best of experience for the users.
Quiet, peaceful sub-urban Taman Kanagapuram sits in between KL and PJ, includes few of elderly home. Once was a rubber estate, lived with Jaffness Comunities of strong religious sense of Buddhism and Hinduism. My first experience when visiting the site, the exisiting building was dilapidated..and dirts, cracks, faded paints can be spotted, which are sentimental for me to metaphor as an old man. Those "unpleasant" signs are actually beautiful. They went through years of climate, human, society changes and results those marks that can't be made in short period. Since the house served as an elderly home before, i think it's time to re-embrance its "glory moment" and provides benefits (wellness) again to the surrounding community.
Throughout the researches on aging, well-being live style, happiness, requirements etc., i was intended to create a new user experiences(interior) while keeping the essence of local architectural language. It is important to do so, because elderlies are easier to integrate or communicate with the things that they are familar over the time. So the relationship and the proximity is the key to engage them to my proposals and enjoy the new facilities that provided for wellness from the points of psychological, physical and spiritual.
