The purpose of this assignment is to provide students a platform to recognize how a material affects in design process, and how they use material to create the feeling or texture in architecture field. Since that, they will learned how to express the design with the appropriate materials.

 

Students are required to come out with a basic shape such as cube, sphere, pyramid and etc. with 3 different materials, at least one transparent material. By that, they have to explore more and play with solid & void, how it affects the space inside, and the relationship between light & shadow.

In this Project 1, I able to put theories that i learned from books such as creating light and shadow by voiding some space. Since that, the suitable material is the key for me to proceed a model, that is high workability and low cost for me. The right adhensive such as UHU or superglue, I have to understand that how it affects when it applied, like superglue if stick on plastic sheet, might appears white spot on it, that may drop the quality of appearance. I learned how to locate the information and align it in my presentation board so that reader can understand easily. Not just as above, I have to be creatve enough to generate the idea that strong concept to produce the best idea.

This assignment practices student to recognize the materials that designers applied on the target building. Throughout the site visit that students did, they can explore the construction materials through their senses, such as touch, see, listen and etc. Hencce, they are able to understand the properties in term of physical and chemical from the research. Not just material names, but they can expose to the construction processes terminologies.

This project considered very fun, when we were long time stay in studio and finally go out for site visit assignment. Everyone was excited for the site visiting and we were split the tasks to ensure that everyone get the right stuff to do for individual parts. Hence, this practice me to understand etnical issue in context of architectural field, and lead me to get the findings from professionals. I able to think critically when it comes to problem, such as some materials that are difficult to search in term of physical and chemical properties, like one-sided glass for example. The group collaboration is the point that hold all of us as group to make sure that the assigment submit in time and fairly split tasks for all to complete.
