This assignment introduces students to be more aware and sensitive on architectural details and do an analysis based on the given masterpiece. Throughout the project, they will learn how to analyse a building in term of diagrams, such as circulation, massing, hierarchy, public vs private etc. After that, they will required to come out with abstract models which derived from the diagrams.
My group was conducting precedent analysis of Groupius House.

In this project, I would really appreciate that we have this platform to conduct an activity to examine our understanding on architectural details. Its really crucial for us to do precedent study analysis on a given title. Its not just gives us chance to explore more about the building and architect, but it helps us in following projects, so that we can do on our own project and improve.
Students are required to conduct their site visit to Cape Rachado and do a site analysis based on the site given. They were allowed to design an observation deck that compliment user-context relationship, within the build-up area of 30m2. There were 2 groups which located in 2 different sites. Group A at beach area, Group B at hilly area. Me and my groupmate, Lynette were under Group B.
Our proposal was based on the most famous activity that carried out on Cape Rachado, which is a bird-watching observatory deck. Since it was a forest reserve, we cant cut off any trees there to build our building. Instead, we shaped our building based on the area that we can "flow through". The gaps between the trees were where our building is. In term of building materials, we choose to use bamboo, as it was one of the fastest growing plant, means it is sustainable material. And we would use it for what i called "honestly in architecture". The terminology of joining bamboos, construct bamboos columns and beams are always complicated, but it doesnt complex than concrete or wood work that "simple" which simply pour down the concrete and done the job. So bamboo works are required every single details of collaboration and human thinking skill to fix the construction.

This assignment enables students to think and explore more on what we want to do. We know we are doing an observation deck, not a normal house, so we need to clearly know whats an observation deck required and whats the main function of it. Other than that, the site visit allows students to learn how to do a site analysis and collect data that can be very useful for us to start off our design process. The communication between groupmates always important so that we can exchange idea and sometimes comment to each other, can helps in improving our model as well as presentation board.
Back to the same site, students are required to design a retreat house for their given client. They are allowed to build the retreat house within 150 m2. They have to be aware of the user profile and site context. They are required to understand of their design process which is interpreting the appropriate form, space and specific function.
My client was Introvert Writer. And i choose the site which is near observation deck 2 and deep forest, because i want my client to observe more than a landscape, and create a balance between nature and human activity. Bamboo was the building materials i intent to use, which is same reason i took from project observation deck. So i did reasearch on introvertism and job scope of a writer. And i would really pleasure to get some information about some architects theory that i would applied on my space design. Such as Bjarke Ingels' design process, Louis Kahn's philosophy on "light and shadow, serviced and servant space".

This project provides me a lot of understanding of space and form from my tutor, Mr.Angus. I learnt to "play with form" to respect to the site and landscape. This project i would say its another big step for me to think more and compare with other building that i saw from Internet and books, and see whats the difference and why they do that, why they dont that. I think the reasons always the evidence that supporting on what i am doing and never neglecting user's 5 senses or their experience when they enter my building and what would they feel before they enter. Refer back to master architects work and their philosophy, always remind me to appreciate their working on their theory, which i really happy that i can apply to my study and it came out as what i expected.
